In love with Australia already. Especially after seeing the beautiful coastal highways! We headed South to Shoalhaven Heads which is about 2 hours from Sydney along the Princes Highway. It was a bit of an adjustment driving on the left side of the road. We took the Great Pacific Drive which had absolutely spectacular views of the coast. We drove along the Sea Cliff Bridge. This is an extension of the road out over the sea along the cliffs .... awesome, awesome scenery.
| Beautiful coastal views. |
It was Sunday so the beaches were very busy. Lots of surfers too.
Once we got to Shoalhaven, we checked in at Mountain View Village for two nights and then drove to Berry to pick up some groceries. Campground was nice ....ducks everywhere!! Grilled steak and Lindeman red wine ($9) for dinner ... yummy!
Monday we headed south from Shoalhaven Heads along the Princes Hwy. Filled the tank with diesel on the way - $66. We stopped on Jervis Bay at Collingwood Beach where we dipped our toes into the sea.
| Ooops, I think this road is for 4WD! |
Pebbly Beach is famous for the wild kangaroos roaming about. They supposedly have been seen body surfing in the Tasman Sea at dawn and dusk. All we saw was "roo" droppings but the beach was beautiful and well worth the treacherous "off road" drive down Pebbly Beach Road to get there. It was more of a dirt track through the mountains full of huge potholes and fallen trees.
Once we arrived at the beach Tracy removed a branch which had impaled the back mudflap. Tracy went swimming in the Tasman Sea ... the water was a little chilly but very refreshing since the outside temp was in the low 40's.
The road back to the main highway was all paved but at the other end not marked as going to Pebble Beach LOL. We spotted our first Kangaroo along this road ... very cool. However, Tracy was too excited and he was too quick for us to get a pic as he crossed the road in front of us. Tonight was are staying at Sapphire Valley Caravan Park in Merimbula, NSW. Very hot here ... glad we have A/C and a pool. Tomorrow we will check out the beach here before heading to our next destination which is ...... unknown.... hopefully we'll get a "roo pic" soon.
Catching up on your trip today...I must say that the grilled steak seemed a better meal than a dinner of Kangaroo balls..yuk! Glad you got to climb the bridge! That would have been on MY bucket list, for sure! Sounds like you are having a great time!
